Corfu (Kerkyra)

We spent a day driving from the village, Zitsa, to Igoumenitsa (one & a half hours). Then, we took the ferry boat (and Papou’s car) to Kerkyra, an island (approximately two hours). We spent the rest of the day and night in Kerkyra with Yiayia & Papou. We enjoyed a packed lunch alongside the seaside & a few hours at the beaches where you hunted for treasure, sea glass, and where you wanted to build a sand castle. Mommy tucked the sea glass in her beach bag to dry and pack for home where we’ll make stepping stones to remember your trips to Greece. Mommy also helped you build a mini pyramid that we called a castle. After a few minutes, you started looking around the sand and said, “Mommy, will you help me find a stick?” You were so sweet----and in full thought as we located a stick. I handed it to you and you placed it right on top of our so called castle and beamed with pride. I love how you make connections from all areas of your life. Your princess castle in your playroom at home has towers with flags on them----and you wanted to imitate those flags on your mini beach castle! I just love that little mind of yours!

In Kerkyra, you enjoyed another favorite pastime-------picking flowers. You handed the daisies and roses that you picked with Papou’s cousin out to Mommy, Yiayia, Papou-------and inspected the petals of one daisy in your little hands. You love flowers of all kinds just like Yiayia & Mommy. I look forward to all the flowers you’ll have surrounding your home one day and I must remember to always bring you fresh flowers when I visit---a small outdoor luxury that you can always enjoy indoors year round! While in Kerkyra, we visited a little of the main town of Corfu’s older streets and shops. Mommy located a maraca of your own----reminding you that at Mrs. Katie, your music teacher, has a maraca that travels the world each week with you and your classmates as you each learn about a new part of the world at music lessons. You were delighted to carry your koukla (baby doll that you received as a baptismal gift in Greece when you were one) on one hip while you shook your new hand painted maraca with your other hand singing as you walked the streets of Corfu------simple pleasures that add joy to Mommy’s heart.

As we continue to travel throughout Greece over the years, I look forward to all the islands we’ll visit together again and again; each journey unlocking new wonders and carrying forth new adventures in your life. May the years draw nearer with blessings as deep as the ocean’s blue waters for each second of today and each tomorrow.
