Before you were born, Daddy & I contemplated on a name for you. We chose Sophia which is perfect for you. Mommy wanted your name pronounced easily in both Greece & the United States---and specifically in Dyersburg, Tennessee. In Greek, your name is spelled, "Sofia": Sigma.Omicron.Fee.Giota.Alpha. I selected that your name in English to consist of the "f" sound to be spelled with a "ph". Although there's a small difference in spelling between the two languages for the most part, we've managed to maintain the same pronunciation of your name. The initial letter, S, or Sigma is written differently among the two languages. You have learned to spell your name in English and love to write your name everywhere! Thus, to teach you that the letter S in Greek was different, the two of us went on an outing throughout the village, Zitsa, to find letters in your name. We photographed letters of the Greek alphabet that belonged in your name. Below, you are tracing the capital Sigma that's the initial letter of your Greek name, Sophia. These letters are like hidden treasures throughout the village. They're located on old aluminum doors of homes and represent the homeowner's first and last name. The homeowners once had their doors engraved to personalize the entrance to their homes. This old tradition is not often replicated now with new home designs throughout Greece. Thus, it's always interesting to me to find these old doors with the initials resonating a history of long ago. I love how your little finger traces this Sigma. I'm not a history buff of ancient times with dates and facts like Daddy is but I love history that is correlated among personal stories of family----the legacies that families leave behind for new generations to find and create their legacy upon.
