You, Sophia, anticipated your fourth birthday with such
great enthusiasm months in advance, telling everyone you met (friends and
strangers alike) that you were three and that you were going to be four. You
even told Mommy and Daddy, “for my birthday, I want……….” You’d fill in the
blank with endless requests from clothes, to gum, toys, dolls, etc. Anytime we
were at Kroger, Dollar General, Wal-Mart, or just out and about, you’d tell us
what you desired for your birthday or ask, “For my birthday, can I have…………..?”
I suppose some to these requests began when Mommy would tell you that you’d
have to wait for your birthday for special treats. We’re often at the store
together and seldom does Mommy let you walk out with items you request. Delayed
gratification builds character. Although, Mommy has been known to cave in and
buy you a few special treats that you really wanted (like the princess dress
from Ross, the Pinkalicious princess dress from T.J.Maxx, or the baby doll with
pigtails from Big Lots). It’s amazing how some items really take hold of that
little heart of yours and make your eyes light up (or your eyes steam with
tears) letting Mommy know exactly which items you can’t live without--------or
those that we both think you can’t live without! But all these memories of you
are my favorites; I can’t live without them or more so you that creates magic
each and every day!

| Mommy, Daddy, & Our Birthday Girl |
On Saturday, June 4th, 2012 you turned four. Mommy
and Daddy delighted in wishing you a Happy, happy birthday! You continued to
beam with excitement and almost a sense of disbelief that it was finally your
birthday. Daddy and Mommy prepared our front yard with all your birthday
decorations, tables, chairs, sprinkler, water table, fruit, drinks, & cake.
You helped us prepare the front yard and were delighted that all of it was just
for you! You’d ask Mommy if it was for your birthday and I would say yes! You’d
smile and say, “all of this is for my birthday!” You were eager to ride with
Daddy in his work truck to the shop and back for tables and for other items we
needed. Then, when ten o’clock arrived, company trickled in with birthday
presents just for you! There was fun in sun under the sprinkler and magic in
the air as you blew out all four of your birthday candles. Friends & family
both enjoyed cake, cupcakes, fruit and drinks as we all celebrated you turning
four! And your birthday gifts had magnets on them as they beckoned you to
venture closer to open them. When Mommy relented that it was time to open your
gifts, you opened one after the other quickly--------eager to see what was
inside each! Mrs. Susan scrambled to keep up with you as she wrote down who
each gift was from and what it was for you & Mommy. You tore into each
special gift. I specifically remember that you were excited about a gray shirt
that you held up. You told Daddy, “I have a shirt like you, Daddy!” At the
conclusion of your birthday party, a few friends and family stayed to help
clean up. You, your cousins, & friends played in the Sonic ice
piles----eating it and throwing it around….always a fun ending to your birthday
party each year!

Mommy took you out to eat lunch at the local Mexican
restaurant while Daddy put up the tables/chairs and ventured to work. Then a
little nap was in your schedule. You were exhausted from all the excitement.
Yet, gifts continued to arrive for you! Mrs. Becky, your preschool teacher dropped
a birthday gift by the backdoor and chatted with Mommy. At the front door, Fed
Ex arrived with a large box for you. Additionally, friends called that they’d
be dropping your gift by too and the mailman brought you yet another mail
ordered gift. When you woke up from your nap, you eagerly unwrapped each new
gift. Jody’s little note inside the large brown box said, “Have fun little
princess!” And that’s just what you did all day!

It was a beautiful day filled
with mini and magnificent surprises just for you! We enjoyed the evening with
Uncle Pete, Aunt Holly, Alex, Zach, and Daddy------eating out, playing at the
house and at the park before we called it a night. That night when I tucked you
in, I asked you what your favorite part of your fourth birthday was and you
said, “My favorite part was my cake, my cupcakes, and all of my birthday
presents!” Then, you asked, “Mommy, what was your favorite part?” Organizing
your birthday party is always a favorite pastime of mine. This year’s tropical
theme was fun to pull together with leis, hibiscus flowers, pinks, greens,
umbrellas, water, sand, mermaids, shells, & palm trees but I’ll have to say
that my favorite part of you turning four was watching you enjoy your special
day. I beamed with pride as you anticipated your birthday party, as you greeted
your guests, as you looked around in wonder when we all sang Happy Birthday to
you, as you ate the icing (your favorite part of cake/cupcakes), as you ran in
and out of the sprinkles, as you opened each gift, as you hugged those that
came and said thank you---------each moment that my eyes caught of you, each
moment that my camera captured of you-----those were my favorites! May all of
these magical, joyful moments continue to captivate you throughout the year and
may your birthday blessings clothe you with benevolence and bountiful health as
time brings about another birthday for you to celebrate such childlike delight
once again!
