The last weekend of September.......and there's so much to savor before the end of September arrives tomorrow night....
One...two....I can count two days of preschool this month that you went into your classroom with a smile. You were super proud of yourself for going in with "your pretty smile!" And the praises you received warmed your heart that much more..........and Mommy's of course! I lost count of the afternoon "pick-up" comments from your teacher about how great your days have been in September during preschool.........Oh! Counting them is joyful but losing count because you are enjoying yourself more and more during your school day is even that much more joyous! I pray for many, many more school days that will envelope you and consume you. I love all that you're learning. I love each letter you write....each word you attempt to spell......pretend play conversation that I hear......excitement to show me your schoolwork....artwork...like the x-ray hand print you created this past week that Mommy tucked away in your keepsake box! I love your desire to paint and paint-------to create art displays around our home. Today, we cut out painted paper in the shape of leaves to decorate your playroom door. We used some sticky dots to adhere them to the door and even tried out sticking acorns to your playroom door----they stuck! You were delighted! Later this afternoon when Daddy came home, you moved them around. When I asked you what you were doing, you grinned and said you were making a happy face with them! Silly girl! I love you! You make me HAPPY.
You're so demanding too! You frustrate Mommy but Daddy reminds me that you'll only be four once. I know....and the days quickly disappear on us. Your first request this morning at 7:45 was for your purple shirt that you wore yesterday. I had washed it but had not dried it. Daddy promised you that you could wear it (snowman caricature on it). Thus, the two of you put it in the drier. All morning, I resisted giving it to you to wear. But after your long afternoon nap, I relented. It was already 3:30 and we were just spending the rest of the evening at home------yet, when you took it off this evening you made sure you were going to have the opportunity to wear it again tomorrow! Why not? I'm sure, I'll try to dissuade you from wearing it but it's already washed ready for the dryer just in case you WIN again. As you pounced around the kitchen floor hopping and skipping today in your purple leggings and purple winter tee, I told Daddy that you have grown taller this weekend. He didn't believe me so he placed you next to your playroom door. Right where the ACORN smiley face was looking at him and where we've measured you since you turned two. Mommy was right. You grew 1/2 an inch since September 9th!! Not even a month......."long & lean"!! Makes me think of your four year old check up in July when Daddy sang to you in the patient room. I'll have to find the lyrics and add them to this blog for you. There's always a song with Daddy! His songs always make Mommy laugh out loud or at least grin from ear to ear!
Today was a perfect day just lounging around the house with you-------and later this evening with Daddy too. Right in the middle of this peaceful day was a snippet of my past right here in our kitchen. A dear college friend, Tiffany, came over for lunch. Her children were with her parents and you were all snuggled in your bed catching up on rest you missed out on after a busy week at preschool and to Memphis for your doctor's appointment this past Thursday. Ms. Tifffany and I enjoyed lunch together---tilapia (seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, parsley flakes, garlic salt, & red pepper) with a side of sweet potato bites that you helped me prepare prior to your nap. The two of us also enjoyed conversation over coffee after our lunch together---almost three hours alone. Simplicity at its best. So much of our past being relived enjoying one another's company, lunch, & conversation just as we did during our Master's program in college and the many years after college through new jobs, moves, engagements, pregnancies, & more. Oh! How I pray that you will find friends in life that are perfect for you like Tiffany is for me. Friends that truly lift you up, care for you, are there for many of life's blessings and unexpected turns....friends that you haven't seen in months but ones that you can pick up the last word and continue that conversation---Sisters in Christ. Neither one of us would give up our children for quiet moments alone with one another but today was a gift as we shared life's journey over lunch...as we pondered finding the balance in life as a friend, mom, wife, etc.
I'm jumping around with my thoughts about today and this month but I want to capture the moments that brought smiles to my face..........this afternoon when I selected books for us to read, there were two of the same books we had read last night. You were quick to say, "Mommy, I want different books!" I had to smile. You normally don't complain or request different books if we happen to read the same books one hundred times (you just love to read with Mommy) but your request was a valid one today. I selected new books to read--------and I must say that this is another education growth spurt! You are ready to plunge one step further. Tomorrow morning, I'll pull all the books we've been reading that are scattered around your bed and stacked on your baby bed........we'll transfer all of them to the playroom and we'll pull new books from our shelves in the playroom. During October, we'll visit the library on a biweekly schedule and buy as many new books as our budget allows especially since October is all about Trick-or-Treats! We'll read different books all month long and make homemade books for you to take ownership of too!
We called Yiayia today and you were so eager to grab the phone to tell her something as you were petting Butterfly Princess Girl Sophia (your kitty cat's name keeps growing every day)! You said to her, "Yiayia exo gatoula!" I can't remember what she understood you to say but it was funny. I loved it though that you automatically pulled out your Greek to talk to Yiayia on the phone! October will bring another TREAT with Yiayia's and Papou's visit to Tennessee-------the perfect treat before a week off from preschool too. Oh my another TREAT for you (Staying home with Mommy)! I'll have to say that it'll be a treat for Mommy too. I'll enjoy having you home to myself for additional lounge days like today. We'll finish your playroom door's display, paint canvas boards with Halloween art, make jack-o-lantern jars, clean up the yard, play at the park, & more. We'll fill each day with as many treats as possible.
Until then, we'll savor the rest of September together tomorrow.
I love you, little one! I can still feel those little arms pulling on my neck this morning----pulling me closer to you and feeling little lips kiss me. I must say that these little hugs might have been the best part of my day! Waking up to you and your four year old demands is just what I want to live for------being your Mommy!
